Hallelujah

An E! network correspondent reports having seen Jason Bateman with his friend, Ben Stiller, at a charity event in LA last week. He/she asked the "Arrested Development" star about the status of his series. Bateman's response, "Actually, great. Supergreat. There is a heartbeat. There is no flatline. And there may be twins."
What does this mean? According to high-placed sources (E!'s, not mine), the final documents have yet to be signed, but there's a 99.9 percent chance that "Arrested" is coming back not only for a full season of 22 episodes, but two full seasons of 22 episodes. Announcement due next week.

Looks like FOX has learned something from HBO, Comedy Central and their own Family Guy experience:

Quality shows like Arrested Development may not be able to compete in the ratings with American Idol, Surviver, and other reality shows, but because they're shelf-life is 10 times longer, DVD's can eventually be sold to their rabid fan bases who appreciate them and eventually the networks will make up their profits.

Hard truth: There's no DVD market for reality shows and their 15 minutes of fame.

Reaching syndication is another consideration for back-end profits. If a show makes it through the first three years, it generally gets the next two for free.

Good point about reality shows. "The Simple Life" is a prime-time hit, but last week I saw it's first season DVD on the $6.99 rack.
