American places

Crazy Horse's monument in the Black Hills endured another explosion in August as part of a mountain-carving process that began in 1948. Following the blast, the rock looks much the same as it did before, despite the displacement of 4,400 tons of granite. When the monument is completed, it will be the largest statue in the world and we'll all be dead. You've got to be impressed by the scope of the project.

Last week marked the 4-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina's arrival at New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, changing the city and that region forever. Yet New Orleans remains the American original-- "too old, too poor, too rich, too black, too French, too mixed, too color-struck, too class-riven, too troubled, too complicated, too beautiful."
