Moeller TV Listings 5/16/06

More of that tired "American Karaoke" on FOX and season finales of about a dozen crime scene forensics programs, is that the best that May television sweeps has to offer anymore? Join me in abandoning network television tonight and tomorrow. Tune to PBS for a "Frontline" investigation tonight at 9 central-- "Can You Afford to Retire?" an in-depth look at the baby boomer generation approaching retirement, and tomorrow at 7, a one hour special profiling "The Great One." It's "Jackie Gleason, Genius at Work."

I've heard it said (probably from this blog) that most of what cable subscribers are paying for is ESPN. In other words, if you don't watch ESPN regularly, you're probably overpaying for cable since the ESPN channels are the most expensive in the cable package.

This is not a problem for me since I watch ESPN a lot, but I do find it a bit frustrating that even though the only television I watch is sports, late night network talk shows and HBO shows (Sopranos, Big Love and Bill Maher), I have to pay for everything (basic cable, expanded basic and a premium channel) to essentially watch 5 channels.

Aaron, you will be glad to know that the FCC is seriously considering proposing an a la carte structure for cable programming, meaning consumers could just choose the channels they want and not subscribe to others (like the Oxygen network). And yes, the ESPNs will definitely be the most expensive of the "basic" cable channels that you would have to pay for.

Kerry Wood will be back in action this week for the Cubs - our problems are over!! Division title here we come.

Since I have a first person account, I'll share it. I attended Kerry Wood's start in Des Moines last weekend for the Iowa Cubs. He looked sharp, threw a lot of pitches, labored a little in one inning and gave up a run. He also had a line drive hit to right field.

The I Cubs didn't score any runs for him though and he took the loss. I believe I was about the only Colorado Springs Sky Sox fan in attendance.

Here's some good news for the Central Division: After a stint on the disable list, Eric Milton is also coming back this week.
