I'll let you make the case that Deadwood is richer than the Sopranos, but no way is it more entertaining.
The Sopranos is the planet's first truly brilliant popcorn entertainment - a show that's as flashy and addictive as it is dense. It's in a class by itself.
Just as no one would have made your argument when the Sopranos was in its second season, let's see if Deadwood can hold up and stay as consistent as the Sopranos.
And let's also acknowledge that there wasn't even an audience for a show like Deadwood until the Sopranos came along and created it.
"1)" shows you what people, especially government people, can't seem to understand: Democratic elections in a Middle Eastern does NOT garantee that that country will draft a nice Jeffersonian (is that a word? it is now) constitution to our liking.
In other words, democratic process does not by definition produce a government that prevents religious fanatics from gaining power.
As one critic has put it, "The Sopranos" is like a big italian dinner, which everyone enjoys, while "Deadwood" is beef jerky, which most people find too tough.
"The Sopranos" is brilliant, but I believe "Deadwood" owes little to it. "Deadwood" is really a pay cable extension of "NYPD Blue," combining Sam Peckinpah westerns ("Wild Bunch," "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia") with David Mamet ("Glengarry Glen Ross.")
The HBO show "The Sopranos" and "Deadwood" both owe the most to for their unflinching depictions is "Oz."
Power in Iraq, like everywhere else, can't be given. It has to be taken. Even Americans don't seem to understand this.
I've heard the word "Jeffersonian." It's clean.
